Spousal Support in Saskatchewan

Support may be awarded on compensatory grounds (career sacrifices for family), non-compensatory grounds (economic need from marriage breakdown), or contractual grounds (agreements). Not all divorces result in spousal support.

Saskatchewan courts use the Spousal Support Advisory Guidelines to help determine amount and duration. These provide ranges based on income, length of marriage, and children. Judges have discretion within these ranges.

Support may be time-limited (to allow the recipient to become self-sufficient) or indefinite (for longer marriages or where self-sufficiency isn't realistic). The SSAG provides duration ranges based on relationship length.

Support orders can be changed if circumstances change materially - job changes, retirement, health issues, or the recipient becoming self-sufficient.
