Spousal Support in Manitoba

Support may be based on compensatory grounds (sacrifices for the family), non-compensatory grounds (economic need), or contractual grounds. Courts look at the roles during marriage and the resulting economic impact.

Manitoba courts use the Spousal Support Advisory Guidelines as a reference. These provide ranges for amount and duration based on income and length of marriage. Judges have discretion within the ranges.

Support can be periodic monthly payments, lump sum, or a combination. It may be time-limited or indefinite depending on the circumstances.

Support orders can be varied if circumstances change significantly - income changes, retirement, cohabitation with a new partner.
