Property Division in Nova Scotia

Matrimonial assets include property acquired during marriage: the matrimonial home, vehicles, savings, investments, pensions. These are generally divided equally.

Property owned before marriage, gifts, inheritances, and certain other assets may be exempt. However, the matrimonial home is always divisible regardless of when acquired.

The matrimonial home has special status - it's always a matrimonial asset even if owned before marriage. Both spouses have equal rights to it.
