Child Support in New Brunswick

Child support in New Brunswick follows the Federal Child Support Guidelines. The amount is based primarily on the paying parent's income and the number of children. It's a legal obligation - you cannot waive child support.

The Guidelines include tables that show the base monthly amount based on income and number of children. For example, a parent earning $60,000 annually would pay approximately $560/month for one child.

On top of table amounts, parents share 'special or extraordinary expenses' in proportion to their incomes. These include childcare, health insurance premiums, special health expenses, extracurricular activities, and post-secondary education.

If your child lives with each parent at least 40% of the time, a different calculation applies. Both parents' incomes are considered, and the higher earner typically pays a set-off amount.
